As we saw the ice skating many times in our lives but has anyone thought what is the science behind it? It can be explained clearly with knowledge of the ice water phase diagram. The below figure shows variation in the water phase along with changes in pressure and temperature.
x-axis as temperature and y-axis as pressure. Now in our situation I.e., ice skating we are keeping the atmospheric temperature constant (0°C) but changing pressure by exerting force with help of a shoe. As pressure increases freezing point of water reduces below 0°C along the line. Hence, a small layer of ice will melt just below the shoes and forms a layer between the ice and the shoes. This will act as a lubricant to skate easily.
So day-to-day life is full of science and technology. Please be hunger for knowledge and implement your science for a better understanding.
